How to Clean Your Washing Machine for Optimal Performance
Keep your clothes fresh by giving your washing machine the clean it deserves.
Your washing machine works hard to keep your clothes clean – but when was the last time you cleaned the machine itself? Over time, detergent build-up, limescale, and trapped moisture can cause bad odours, reduce efficiency, and even affect how clean your laundry comes out.
The good news? You don’t need special tools or expensive products. With a few simple steps, you can easily clean your washing machine and keep it running at its best.
Why Cleaning Your Washing Machine Matters
• Removes detergent and fabric softener residue
• Prevents mould, mildew, and bad smells
• Improves washing results
• Extends the lifespan of your machine
• Saves energy and water
How Often Should You Clean It?
For most households, a deep clean every 1 to 3 months is ideal. If you use your washer frequently or notice musty smells, monthly is best.
What You’ll Need:
• White vinegar (2 cups)
• Baking soda (½ cup)
• A clean microfiber cloth
• An old toothbrush
• Optional: lemon juice for freshness
Step-by-Step: Cleaning a Front-Loading Washing Machine
1. Clean the Rubber Seal
Open the door and inspect the rubber seal around the drum. Wipe it down with a cloth soaked in vinegar or soapy water. Use a toothbrush to scrub away mould or dirt hiding in folds.
2. Run a Cleaning Cycle with Vinegar
• Pour 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the drum (no clothes).
• Run a hot water cycle (60–90°C if possible).
• This kills bacteria, removes limescale, and breaks down residue.
3. Add Baking Soda for a Second Cycle
• Sprinkle ½ cup of baking soda into the drum.
• Run another short hot cycle.
This helps deodorise and deep-clean the inside.
4. Wipe Down the Drum and Door
After both cycles, use a cloth to wipe inside the drum, the door, and around the seal.
5. Clean the Detergent Drawer
• Remove the drawer and soak it in warm, soapy water.
• Scrub with an old toothbrush, rinse, and dry before putting it back.
6. Wipe the Exterior
Use a damp cloth and a bit of vinegar or mild soap to wipe the outside of the machine, including buttons and the display.
